Heritage Preservation: Tangible Heritage: The Cisterns of Alexandria

The cisterns of Alexandria are buildings that have lost their basic function over the course of time due to the development of the water company in the second half of the 19th century. This has led to neglect of both their structure and their historical value. Lately, the remaining cisterns in the city have been added to the list of historic buildings in Alexandria established by the Alex Med center and protected under Egyptian Law number 144 of 2006.

In February 2008, Alex Med began an ambitious project to document the history of these cisterns and to analyze their condition in order to make a proposal for developing them and setting guidelines for their conservation. The project will also include a publication on the cisterns of Alexandria.
