This 6
th
round of the Biennale resumes the footsteps of previous ones. It is concerned, in particular, with the Miniature “Artist’s Book”, the dimensions of which do not exceed 15 × 15 × 15 cm. It is an attempt to explore the artists’ creativity in this field on this small scale, emphasizing that creativity, technical skill, and authentic expression are the most important values in an artwork, which is not necessarily linked to the greatness of the artwork’s size.

The Veil and 9/11: The Orientalist Discourse Revisited is an attempt to excavate the prevailing discourses on the veil, notably after the bombing of the World Trade Center in New York. This article tries to argue that the Orientalist discourse has been revisited in most of the Western debates on the veil. For instance, the veil after 9/11 was connected with a lot of stereotypes and prejudices such as the veil as a sign of oppression, gender inequality, terrorism, patriarchal ideologies, lack of voice and more significantly a refusal to adopt Western values and ways of life. Furthermore, this article will try to come across four items: Orientalism and the question of difference; the perception of the veil in colonial era; the veil and 9/11; and the veil and New American Orientalism.

Montazah site, known since Antiquity, was rediscovered and developed in the 19th and 20th centuries to become Egypt’s royal summer retreat. Khedive Abbas Helmi, fascinated by the natural beauty of the site, decided to build a summer retreat there, the Salamlek, in 1892. King Fouad, later in 1927, built the Haramlek, and King Farouk added more dependencies including the Tea Pavilion and bridge. Following the 1952 Revolution, the gardens and the beaches were opened to the public, yet still most of the site was reserved for Egypt’s elite society. An Italian company developed and managed the site and its beach cabins, while the royal residences were transformed followed with the addition of the Palestine Hotel in the late 1960s, while casinos, clubs and entertainment facilities were added successively. This brief historical account is meant to document the history and development of the site, and serve as a guide to its resort and recreational facilities.

This year, the two cycles of 2011 and 2012 have been combined together. The focus of the 2011 award was the “Architectural Creativity of Young Egyptian Architects” to encourage young architects and be acquainted with their visions and ideas, in addition to offering a forum for presenting and discussing their architectural projects. The 2012 Award focused on “New Comprehensive Developments and Cityscapes”. Over the past few decades, a new form of architectural design has appeared on the Egyptian architectural scene, which, unlike the limited nature of individual buildings or residential apartments, entails comprehensive development projects.
