The German Egyptian Year of Science and Technology 2007
The German-Egyptian Year of Science & Technology 2007 was a bilateral initiative of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Egyptian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, represented by H.E. Dr. Annette Schavan and H.E. Prof. Dr. Hany Helal. The DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) took over the coordinating role of the project.
The objective of the Year of Science was to strengthen the scientific cooperation between Egypt and Germany and to provide a wide range of specialists with the opportunity for scientific exchange.
The Year of Science 2007 focused on 6 main topics: Biotechnology, Medicine, Material Sciences, Renewable Energies, Social Sciences and Water. It was put emphasis on the priority of science and research and pointed out the scientific potential in Egypt, as well as the need for exchange between the two countries. The aim was to build up and expand networks between Egyptian and German scientists, not only for the Year of Science, but to keep them working on the long run.
Around 150 projects and conferences took place in Egypt and Germany. Considerable scientists were holding workshops within the 6 specialist topics and additionally there have been several Highlight events, cross-section events and events which were also open to the broader scientific community.
With the help of these events and projects, existing co-operations were strengthened, networks have been expanded and new research projects, which are supposed to deepen the scientific cooperation on a long term, have been initiated.
The extraordinary success is supported through several follow-up projects between the two ministries and between the Egyptian ministry in cooperation with the DAAD including various scholarships for scientists and PhD-candidates and the funding of mobility and research projects.
