Dr Christian Hoste

Biography

Christian HOSTE is currently working for CIRAD, the French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development. He is the Director of ECART (European Consortium for Agricultural Research in the Tropics), a European Economic Interest Grouping mobilising more than 1,600 scientists in the field of Agricultural Research for Development (ARD). He is also the Coordinator of an EC-funded project aiming at increasing cooperation and coordination between the ARD programmes of 14 European countries.

Abstract

European contribution to Agricultural Research for Development (ARD)

Over the recent years, the European Commission and Member States have adopted research and development policies and programmes to support agricultural development in developing and emerging countries. The European belief is that, for these countries, agriculture has a pivotal role in economic growth, and is directly linked with social development, food security, and sustainable resource management. Agricultural Research for Development (ARD) is a key component of this strategy aiming at stimulating progress towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). This presentation reviews the main European policies, programmes and projects as well as the different coordination mechanisms in the field of ARD.
