Avesthagen-Indian Biotech Success(Video message)
Biotech companies in India are a diverse lot, comprising contract research organizations (CROs) and those involved in research and development. Avesthagen Ltd, is India’s leading systems biology company and is a shining example of a successful Indian biotech company based on an innovation driven R&D platform. I started the organization in 1998 as a bridge between academia and industry based on original research that was patented that could be channelled into products. This concept of a public private partnership faced challenges at various levels including those of finance. As a private company that began its formal business operations in 2001, our objective was create an India-based global entity that is founded on the pillars of India’s biodiversity, frontier-based science and integration of the convergence of food and pharma and diagnostics. Avesthagen uses a unique business model where cutting-edge research is patented and commercialized as technologies or products that are launched into the market. One example is creation of AdePt, a comprehensive database of medicinal plants linked to disease conditions, and MetaGrid- an algorithm that links metabolites to efficacy at the cellular level. We have over 160 patents in the areas of biopharmaceuticals, bioagriculture, bionutrition and science innovation. Our unique IP to business model allows for creating new technologies / research processes and partnering with clients both globally and locally. For example with BioMerieux (France) in the area of infectious diseases and with Limagrain (France) projects in the area of agriculture. Similarly Avesthagen and Cipla (India) continue to be business partners. As a home-grown biotech enterprise we have been able to acquire significant support from venture capitalists and other investors in the country. Avesthagen has recently launched four new projects – The AVESTAGENOME Project, drug discovery, Cancer stem cell initiative, and environment-adjusted crops.
