Irrigation Technologies And Management For Sustainable Agriculture in Egypt
The demand for water is increasing and becomes the critical resource for sustainability of life particularly under arid conditions. Land and water resources were considered in agriculture strategy as the most key elements required improvement and enhancement in their management and use. Increasing the value of crop production per unit water consumed this would be complemented by measures needed to improvement of the already developed land resources. The agriculture sector generally perceived to use water inefficiently. Under Egyptian conditions, extending agriculture to desert lands and the maximizing water use efficiency are the two main components of the national agriculture strategy to increase agriculture production. Sustainable agriculture development in the new lands demanded care and understanding of the fragile ecosystem of the desert environment. Therefore water management and irrigation technologies are the main wheals for agricultural development projects in Egypt. Based on the following concepts, development project in the Egyptian desert should be planned and take in cosideraion, resources protection bases and better management of dry land resources, resource inventories required to develop data bases, and development and implementation of policies for reducing human and live stock population pressures on deteriorating lands so that desertification can be prevented. In order to assure sustainability for the future planned agricultural development projects the following components should be included: semiarid agroforestry of multiple values concepts, organic farming systems, clean energies and clean farms and villages will attract or can be a focal points for agrotourism and health care centers in such a clean environment. Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation is working at lunching the On-farm Irrigation Development in the Old-land (OFIDO) program. The main goal of this program is to improve on-farm irrigation systems in old land in order to save significant amounts of water to be used in reclaiming the targeted areas in 2017 horizontal expansion plan. |
