Bas E. Dutilh studied biology at Utrecht University and received his PhD in bioinformatics (2007) at the Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre in The Netherlands. He focuses on comparative genomics in a broad sense, extracting and using the traces left by evolution in the genomes of all organisms to gain knowledge about their function. A recently acquired a personal Veni grant from the Dutch Science Organization enables him to do three years of independent research on the interactions between microorganisms in the wild (i.e. in their natural habitat). As part of this work, he is addressing the role of microbes in the onset and progression of diseases including colorectal cancer. The past year he has been working on comparative metagenomics at San Diego State University as a visiting researcher in the Departments of Computer Science and Biology.
