   Biography
 
Michael Harms was born on 12 November 1964. He studied History, English and German Linguistics and received his Masters degree in 1992 from Kiel University, Germany. From 1993 to 1997 Michael worked as a visiting lecturer at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, UK, teaching German Language and Cultural Studies. Upon return to Germany, he taught at Ruhr University Bochum where he was awarded his PhD in Applied Linguistics in 2002. From 1998 to 2006 Michael worked for the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in Bonn in various functions, amongst others as Head of Section for Postgraduate Courses in the field of Development Cooperation. In 2006 Michael Harms joined the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK) in Bonn where he headed the Department for International Affairs. In May 2008, he returned to DAAD where he took over as Head of Division North Africa, Middle East and the Gulf Region. Since September 2010, Michael Harms has been working in his current position as Director of the DAAD Cairo Branch which has a history spanning more than half a century of successful collaboration with Egyptian Universities and Research Institutions. As of 1 January 2013 Michael has also been entrusted with the directorship of the newly established German Science Centre (DWZ) in Cairo. The DWZ is a joint initiative of nine German universities, research organisations, funding agencies and educational institutions heavily supported by the German Embassy in Cairo and the Foreign Office in Berlin.
