The BA Science Supercourse is a project designed to network scientists and to empower educators around the world through the sharing of scientific lectures online for free. It represents an extended scope to the initial Supercourse Project housed at the University of Pittsburgh. The current Science Supercourse is designed to expand beyond the topics of Health and Preventive Medicine, to encompass other areas of science, namely Environment, Agriculture and Computer Engineering in addition to Public Health. The project is an extended joint endeavor between the Library of Alexandria in Egypt and the WHO Collaborating Centre at the University of Pittsburgh. Science Supercourse does not grant degrees or certificates, but is designed to be a repository of resources for teachers, professors, and other educators to use as they see fit in their teaching of science. The BA Science Supercourse was launched at the Library of Alexandria in Egypt in January 2009, under the direction of Dr. Ismail Serageldin, the Director of the Library.

Communities of Interest for BA Africa Science.
The goal of collaboration between Supercourse Team and Library of Alexandria is improving global training and research by use cost effective, simple, but powerful methods.
At the beginning, the Supercourse – Library of Alexandria collaboration was in area of Health. Since 2002, project activities included Health lectures DVD distribution and Supercourse mirror at the Library of Alexandria. In 2009, Science Supercourse Project http://ssc.bibalex.org/home/list.jsf was established in four areas of Science: Health, Agriculture, Environmental and IT. During 2015 we collected all the faculty in most of Universities in Africa and Arab World. In addition we are collecting faculty in our 6 main areas of science (previous 4 areas, Library Sciences and Research Methods in addition). By September 2015 we identified 526,000 unique E-mail addresses of scientists of the world. Recently we took this to whole new level where we were able to capture 1,200,000 scientists. With the more than 300,000 scientists who already received our newsletter through our current members, we now have about 2,000,000 members of the Library of Alexandria Scientific grid, or 25% of the world’s scientists with the Library of Alexandria at the heart. Current Joint project that is being implemented is the Research Methods Library of Alexandria which aims to provide an answer to an emerging problem: barriers to developing and publishing scientific discoveries locally and globally. The approach that our group undertook to solve this problem is simple, involving improving access to research methods materials through Research Methods Library of Alexandria (RMLA) - http://ssc.bibalex.org/helpdesk/introduction.jsf. Currently we have 19 buttons and 7 Link to RMLA in Regional Centres in Africa. We will discuss future collaboration and development of Research Methods Library of Alexandria (RMLA) at 2016 BioVision meeting. |
