Dr. Biljana Papazov Ammann, born 1948, obtained her doctorate in the Department of Methodology of Science at the Philosophical Institute of the Bulgarian Academy of Science in Sofia. In 1987, she was invited by the Swiss government as a guest scientist. Subsequently she stayed, thus enabling herself to further develop her unique and sensitive approach between the Eastern and Western societies. As her awareness and knowledge of Western societies developed, she sought to integrate apparently incompatible worlds — East and West, rich and poor, religion and science — through her concept of a new "Question Culture". Publications on Science and Humanity, Scientific Knowledge and Culture of Science, New Approach to Understanding the World, Battle on Objectivity within Society: the Female Dilemma, The Hidden Harmonics or the Mystery of Meaningfulness, Quo Vadis 21st Century, Fight for the Future, The Ideology of Now, How to meet the World — as Observers or Participants? She participated by teaching in activities of the Federal School of Technology in Zürich and at the University of Bern about discursive methods and shared her views in international conferences in Montpellier (France), in Engelberg (Switzerland), Milano (Italy), Nürnberg (Germany), Lima (Peru). And last but not least she appreciated enormously the opportunity to contribute five times to BioVisionAlexandria.

The Dilemma: Progress or Development? |
Progress or Development? We are indeed confronted with this choice. But what does it mean for humanity? How can we as morally feeling and thinking human beings make a choice between progress in technology and social development? To define the choice between these two aims is a difficult task, since we have lost our way and our passion. It is only with a moral direction and new-found passion that we can develop a moral enthusiasm of Imagination. This can be achieved by ridding ourselves of a superficial understanding of life when making decisions and learning to navigate in a multipolar world between several Utopias. We can only succeed in this if we learn to ask the right questions — if we are ready to invest in a "Questioning Culture", in order to discover and thus create a new human reality, thanks to our passion. |
