Where nxt for Innovation and Global Challenges? |
|

"Innovation" and "Global Challenges" are a firm fixture in just about every research funder's strategic plan. Researchers are increasingly expected to help businesses and economies grow (the Innovation bit). They are also being called on to answer big global questions and the list is getting longer. These so called Global Challenges include tackling the diseases of modern life; halt the loss of plant and animal species; combating climate change; ensuring we have enough food to eat and energy to power our homes and businesses; creating a new generation of antibiotics, making our cities work smarter and ensuring we all have access to clean water. And at the same time universities must do this at a time of declining national funds and evaluation systems that do not properly credit international collaborations and interdisciplinary teamwork. However, these contrasting pressures can be reconciled and in this workshop Ehsan Masood, Editor of Research Professional and Tutor in Science and Innovation Policy at Imperial College London, will explain how and why. Drawing on the latest policy insights, Ehsan will present a set of case studies on what some of the major international funders want; how universities have successfully engaged with them, and the lessons learned by those that didn't quite make the grade. |
