As the CEO of Sekem Energy, Mrs. Birnstingl focuses on comprehensive and sustainable energy concepts, which encompass the establishment of regional value chains as well as the use of renewable raw materials and the implementation of sustainable technologies. Following references are listed exemplarily: Ecological Footprint Analysis (SPI) of products and agricultural processes, Evaluation of stakeholders in the field of energy efficiency, Resource studies and energy concepts: for St. Margarethen a. d. Raab und 5 surrounding townships; for the 5 districts of Eastern Styria and the municipality of Morbach in Rhineland-Palatinate (Germany), Renewable Energy projects in Egypt, Solar thermal project with the Austrian Development Agency, Photovoltaics – community solar installations; project development – eg. 1 MW installation in Mureck, Urban greening; urban planning of green infrastructure. Mrs. Birnstingl founded “AKREMI” - the Association for a closed loop agriculture based on intercropping. AKREMI is a consulting company for renewable energy with a network of 120 farmers, which focuses on the rule of agriculture as a future energy supplier for society.

  Abstract

Paving new ways for sustainable Photovoltaic solutions in Egypt
Paving new ways for sustainable Photovoltaic solutions in Egypt A holistic approach, developing new ways of Photovoltaic solutions in Egypt is the overall goal in this project which is cofounded by the Austrian Development Agency (ADA) Together with a strong network of Austrian companies which are experienced in photovoltaic technologies and the ADA it is possible to invest in education and local capacity building. With this consortium investing in local capacity building is one of the key methodologies’ to create both, local added value and long-lasting business relations. The focus of this project - lead by Sekem Energy GmbH, Elektro Merl GmbH, Berufsförderungsinstitut Burgenland, Sattler & Schanda Rechtsanwälte, Technische Universität Graz together with the Egyptian partner Sekem Holding for Investment Company, Eco Energy, Heliopolis University for Sustainable Development, Prof. Dr. Hani Atef Nabhan Sewelam (Department for Sustainable Development AUC) - is to create basic conditions of suitable PV-systems for the Egyptian market concentrating the sustainability and quality aspects of PV systems in Egypt. This should happen under consideration of a high local added value, using locally available system components and domestic know how of experts. The project activities include identifying the existing PV market in Egypt as well as the existing quality & safety standards, responsibility of public authorities, regular & technical approval procedures and legal & fiscal security from the investors' point of view. In the next step the feasibility for technical and economical feasible possibilities of PV applications by verifying the legal aspects, will be exanimated. High potential applications could be irrigation for agriculture purpose, fresh water supply in general, cooling of houses, improvement of the grid stability, increasing the prevention of black outs of the grid, etc. Further, a Training of Trainer program the “Egyptian PV technician" with certification is implemented together with the Egyptian partner to attract the necessary skilled labor for the growing industry. This training program includes practical trainings for a successful design and realization of a PV plant and necessary components, training for PV excursions guides, training for financial institutes, and also a training for PV O&M for the vocational training center at Sekem farm. By the construction of an PV pumping station at an isolated farm of Sekem, also practical issues appearing within the lead period were analysed. Further this plant replaced a Diesel driven generator and can reduce the CO2 print of such a farm dramatically. All these activities are accompanied by PV conferences, specialized excursions to PV plants and relevant workshops. These public events are connecting the relevant partners and stakeholders in the field of PV, and should further initiate a market stimulating Egyptian PV platform.
