Lida Anestidou, DVM, Ph.D. is Senior Program Officer in the Division on Earth and Life Studies of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM) and Director of the OIE Collaborating Center for Laboratory Animal Welfare and Science. She is a highly experienced science policy professional with in depth knowledge of research and education at the global level. As the science officer of NASEM’s Institute for Laboratory Animal Research, Dr. Anestidou directs studies that provide guidance and information on laboratory animal issues to the U.S. government, the national and international biomedical and laboratory animal science communities, and the public. Under the aegis of the OIE Collaborating Center Dr. Anestidou leads the One-Health Research Fellowships in Pakistan, aimed at building research and training capacity in the Pakistani One Health sector. An internationally recognized expert in scientific integrity and responsible science, since 2011 she has led the “Educational Institutes on Responsible Science”, a diverse portfolio of international multi-million dollar programs on responsible conduct of research and education in the Middle East/North Africa and South and Southeast Asia. Before joining The National Academies, Dr. Anestidou was a faculty member of the Center for Biomedical Ethics and Society, Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. Dr. Anestidou holds a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from Aristotle University in Greece (her home country), a Masters in Veterinary Sciences from the University of Florida, and a doctorate (Ph.D.) in Physiology from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center UTHealth Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Dr. Anestidou serves as an Independent Expert in the Ethics Evaluation of grant applications to Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Program of the European Research Council and the European Commission. She is a member of the External Ethics Advisory Committee of the Genetic Biocontrol of Invasive Rodents (GBIRd) program and of the Advisory Committee of the 6th World Conference on Research Integrity (June 2-5, 2019).
