Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP), in cooperation with the British Council, organized an international conference entitled: "Darwin's Living Legacy: An International Conference on Evolution and Society" from 14 to 16 November 2009.
The three-day Conference marked the 200 year anniversary of Darwin's birth, and the 150 year anniversary of the publication of his book On the Origin of the Species by Means of Natural Selection.
One of the greatest scientists of all time, with his work forming the foundation of many different research fields, Darwin's ideas still stir up debate. The Conference aims to explore Darwinism, and promote an informed dialogue about evolutionary science, grounded in a mutual respect for differences in ideas, cultures and religious beliefs.
The Conference hosted world renowned academic speakers from over 30 countries, who will explore the role of the evolutionary science in a range of areas including medicine, agriculture, biodiversity and environment. The Conference has a special program strand dedicated to young researchers, providing access to many of the renowned international academics and their work throughout the three-day conference. An exhibition of the life and works of Charles Darwin will be also open to public.
"Darwin's Living Legacy" is the culmination of the British Council?s global year-long celebration of the life, work and legacy of Charles Darwin, an initiative known as the "Darwin Now" project.
