“A little knowledge that acts is worth infinitely more than much knowledge that is idle.” Khalil Gibran (1883–1931)
We would very much like your feedback and comments to Diabetes.Supercourse@bibalex.org.
We will soon have those lectures on CDs to be distributed to faculties and academic institutions in the MENA Region. If you would like to help us distribute those lectures in your country, please send to Fayrouz.Ashour@bibalex.org or Marwa.Elwakil@bibalex.org.
Among the diabetes events taking place in the Region in the coming period is the 12th pan Arab Conference on Diabetes PACD12 which will take place in Concorde Al Salam Hotel, Cairo, Egypt from 25 to 28 March 2008. You can find more information about the conference at:
http://www.arab-diabetes.com
Another major event will be held at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, is its fourth international biennial conference - BioVisionAlexandria 2008 - held from 12 to 16 April 2008 in Alexandria, Egypt. Leading experts of the four corners of the globe are invited to address new approaches explaining why the immense advances that are taking place in science do not adequately translate noticeable improvements in the lives of the poorest 20% of the human race. The three-day conference will shed light on themes: Health, Agriculture and Environment. We will be having a track with the title “Diabetes Supercourse” reporting the Diabetes Supercourse for the MENA Region project as well as other diabetes topics by eminent speakers in the field. For more information about registration and group registrations contact Ms. Asmaa Soliman at: asmaa.soliman@bibalex.org.

Groundbreaking news is the idea of Scientific Supercourse! Starting as Supercourse for Epidemiology and Global Health, focusing on Diabetes in its Diabetes Supercourse; it now expands beyond global health into a broad Scientific Supercourse, accelerating the dissemination of scientific developments to the world’s researchers and classrooms.

Message from Ronald LaPorte:
Dear Friends, Dr. Ismail Serageldin and I are very pleased with the development of the MENA Diabetes Supercourse. It is amazing that in such a short period of time 1000 members have joined and contributed 100 lectures. Many of you are my friends. I wanted to briefly introduce myself. I am Ron LaPorte at the University of Pittsburgh and the Library of Alexandria. I have co-directed a World Health Organization Collaborating center for Diabetes Registries, Training and Molecular epidemiology in Pittsburgh. My interest has been helping to establish Type 1 diabetes registries to monitor the incidence of Type 1 diabetes. To do this I started a WHO Multinational project for Childhood diabetes in the early 1990s with Jaakko Tuomilehto from Finland and Hilary King who headed the Diabetes Program at WHO. I got to meet many of you in the development of your Type 1 diabetes registries. It is amazing to me to see the exciting data from your region. In Dr. Arab's lecture he presents the existing data. It is most fascinating as Kuwait has an extraordinarily high incidence (22/100,000), and it is much greater that our early data in Kuwait. Following Kuwait as you see below is Saudi Arabia with 12.3 and Qatar with 11.4. There is almost a 40 difference in incidence across the region. Some of this may be due to ascertainment, but this is the largest difference I have seen in a region. Isn't this most interesting? The Incidence where I live is ~16/1000,000. These data come from Dr. Arab's lecture, and from the Diabetes Atlas. Any thoughts as to why this occurred? Please write to me at ronlaporte@aol.com.
