On Friday, 26 January 2007, Aymen Ibrahem, PSC Senior
Astronomy Specialist, gave a public observing session, Luxor Space Watch, at
the magnificent Luxor Temple, Luxor, Egypt. The participants of this astronomy
festivity were pupils and teachers of Al Salam Primary School.
The observing session featured observing the Moon with two telescopes,
showing the details of the lunar surface in varying magnification powers.
The youngsters experienced their first views of the night sky through a
telescope. They were impressed by the view of the lunar terrains, including
prominent craters, lunar plains and high lands. The interested pupils requested
more observing sessions.
"I admire Luxor, I visited the glorious city many times before,"
said Mr. Ibrahem. "On 25 August 2005, I photographed the Jupiter-Venus
conjunction over the colossi of King Rameses the Great. The view was awesome. I
have always wanted to give public observing sessions there."
Before the observation, Ibrahem gave a public lecture entitled "A Trip
to the Moon", a virtual space exploration of the Moon.
