Dr. Moustafa Elfeki: Renewing the religious discourse is part of renewing the Egyptian mind with regard to education, culture and media

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina organized a seminar to discuss the challenges of renewing the religious discourse. A host of intellectuals and thinkers, together with Dr. Shawki Allam, the Grand Mufti of Egypt, and representatives of Al-Azhar and the Coptic Church, attended the event.

Dr. Moustafa Elfeki, Director of the BA, said that renewing the religious discourse is part of renewing the Egyptian mind with regard to culture, education and media. He also stressed that renewing the religious discourse is part of Egypt’s role of enlightenment and reform in the Arab region.

Dr. Shawki Allam, the Grand Mufti of Egypt, referred to a number of challenges facing the renewal of the religious discourse such as the age-old misconceptions surrounding Jihad and the relationship between Muslims and non-Muslims, as well as the distorted image of Islam in the West. He also called for the cooperation between religious institutions and other institutions in society, emphasizing the fact that social awareness is being developed in the face of terrorism and extremism.

Anba Ermia, Director of the Coptic Orthodox Cultural Center, emphasized the importance of fighting violence and terrorism, and stressed the importance of coexistence between Christians and Muslims, as it has always been throughout history.
