Alexandria — As part of the annual competitions organized by the BA Youth and Young Peoples’ Libraries, the BA will hold a competition on 12 April 2006 entitled Great Scientists for English Language school students, in cooperation with Alex Trade Center- Albayan, aiming at encouraging youth and children to work together in educational projects.

To participate in the competition, students must meet the following requirements: each participating school must select a famous scientist, artist, historian or politician, and develop a presentation in any of these forms: power point presentation, theatrical performance, oral speech, or using a poster with an oral presentation. Competition is limited to children of two different categories: age 8-11 years from English language schools (where English is the first language); or age 12-15 years from French & German language schools (where English is a second language). Students must research the character and understand the persons’ achievements and significance. Students must prepare a list of resources used in their research. Presentations must be prepared in English without parent or teacher assistance.

The Competition Selection Committee will comprise a group of experts selected from various educational and cultural institutions, including the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Ain Shams University, Alexandria University, and the Arab Academy for Science & Technology. Students will be evaluated based on the depth of research; creativity in presenting their selected character; language usage and punctuation; theatrical or oral performance; and ability to interact with audience.

Winners will be awarded a merit certificate of achievement; and an annual membership to the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. Participants will be given a valuable collection of books; and a certificate of participation. Awards are presented by the BA and Alex Trade Center- Albayan.

The competition will start at 9:00 hrs at the Great Hall at the BA Conference Center.
