Posted on

Alexandria—the BA Arab Reform Forum will organize from 1-3 March 2007 the Fourth Arab Reform Conference under the theme: "Human Rights, Women, and Development". Human rights, women, and development are correlated aspects of Arab reform. Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Library of Alexandria, and General Adel Labib, Governor of Alexandria will open the conference, participated by more than 700 intellectuals, writers, and researchers from 18 Arab countries, in addition to representatives from different international and Arab human rights and civil society organizations.

The term "Development" means the utmost utilization of human and material resources of a certain society to achieve aspired progress. Development is not refined to one aspect of life, but it includes social, economic, cultural, political, educational, legal, and administrative aspects. Human being is the main catalyst and at the same time the main target of development. The success and sustainability of a developmental program depends on the rehabilitation and sound preparation of the human factor. The role of women in development and in facing different challenges is no less than that of men. Women are effective and crucial in production and are impetus for change.

In this context, the BA pursues its mandate as a catalyst of reform for the fourth year. The conference will include 7 sessions in addition to a closing session addressing the following topics:

1- Violence against Women
2- Micro-credit: A Tool for Empowerment
3- Human Rights and the Environment
4- Equal Access to Education – A Basic Human Right
5- Human Rights and Development
6- The Role of Social Capital in Reform
