BoT Annual Meeting and Conference on Inscriptions and Calligraphy

H.E. Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak, First Lady of Egypt and Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, headed the Annual Meeting of the Board of Trustees that was held on 24 April 2003. A number of major decisions were taken including the annual activity plan for the Library, the appointment of the managing boards of the new BA Research Centers to commence their activity within this coming year and the Library’s research projects.

The meeting was followed by a tour of the BA where H.E. Mrs. Mubarak met the young leaders of the Library and viewed the “Panorama of My Beautiful Country” Exhibition.

H.E. also inaugurated the First International Conference on “Inscriptions, Writings and Calligraphy in the World throughout the Ages”, which is considered to be the starting point of the Calligraphy Center in the Library. In her speech, Mrs. Mubarak stated that this Conference is the start of one of the academic centers in the Library. H.E. confirmed that the coming phase will witness new academic centers in the Library, each serving a specialized cultural and scientific sector which will place the Library among the leading advanced knowledge centers in the world. The Bibliotheca Alexandrina has become a cultural and scientific complex that not only offers traditional librarian services, but also adds new modern techniques to the cultural life aiming at expanding the extent of human knowledge.

The Conference was held in association with the Center of Calligraphy and Image Studies in Paris seven University (Denis Diderot). More than 60 scientists from Bahrain, Egypt, France, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, and Republic of Yemen participated in the conference. The types and origins of calligraphy in the world and its importance in enriching man’s life were some of the topics that the Conference dealt with. The researches that were presented in the Conference discussed issues relating to Calligraphy such as: “The Origin of Ancient Calligraphy”, “Calligraphy in East Asia”, “Image and Calligraphy”, “Arab and Islamic Calligraphy”, “The picture and the Image”, “Maintenance and Writing Material”, “Western Calligraphy”, “Writings and Miniatures in Turkey” and “Technology and Calligraphy”.
