Drawings of Taheya Halim in an Exhibition at the BA

Posted on

Alexandria—The BA Arts Center is organizing an exhibition featuring sixty drawings and sketches by artist Taheya Halim (1919- 2003) from 26 February to 8 March 2009.

Taheya Halim is a symbol of the impressionist school in the Egyptian modern artistic movement where she occupies a great position. She has Egyptian features that cannot be missed, formed during her several trips to the Egyptian South (Nubia), the Egyptian countryside and oasis. All these added a serene, gentle and melancholic touch, in keeping with the Egyptian environment at that time. Her early journeys to France and Denmark also contributed to her artistic character and wide horizons, eventually making her one of the most prominent artists of her generation. She quit drawing in her late years as her hands grew weaker.

As we work on displaying the wonders of the 20th century Egyptian art, a number of notable marks are selected from that trail. Taheya Halim exhibition comes to crown a number of other significant ones for Hamed Saeed, Samir Rafe`, Mounir Kanaan and Hamed Oweis, all with the aim of introducing the BA visitors to the course those artists took and the idiosyncrasies and dimensions of each. This qualitative exhibition provides a lesson in reading the character and cultural milieu of Taheya Halim, a lesson we are proud to present and document.

The Exhibition will be held in the BACC West Exhibition Hall and is open for public.
