Inauguration of “Heavenly Pages” Exhibition

Alexandria—On the ocassion of the International Year of Astronomy (IYA 2009), and in the context of the Egypt-Italy Science Year (EISY 2009), the BA Planetarium Science Center (PSC) holds an exhibition entitled “Heavenly Pages”.

This Exhibition displays unique volumes by some of the most prominent European astronomers. Among the books on display are the first edition of Sidereus Nuncius , by Galileo Galilei (1610); De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium, by Nicolaus Copernicus (1566); and the recently restored Firmamentum Sobiescianum, by Johannes Hevelius (1690). Visitors will be able to see the books and browse a number of them virtually on the computers accompanying the Exhibition.

The Inaugural Ceremony will begin with speeches by Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Library of Alexandria; Ambassador Hagar Islambouly, Head of BA External Relations Sector; Dr. Tarek Hussein, Director of the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology; Dr. Patrizia Raveggi, Director of the Italian Cultural Institute and Prof. Franco Porcelli, Scientific Attaché, Embassy of Italy in Egypt.

The Opening Ceremony will take place on Monday, 22 June 2009 at 5:00 pm. The Exhibition will continue until 21 July 2009.
