The BA Celebrates the Millennium of Ibn Al-Haytham’s Book of Optics

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina organizes a webinar on Thursday, 8 April 2021, in celebration of the millennium of Al-Hasan Ibn Al-Haytham’s Book of Optics. Having contributed to the invention of the modern-day camera, this seminal book presented the principles of empirical research, and placed considerable emphasis on the development of optics and astronomy.
The publication of the Book of Optics was a major scientific revolution contributing to the European renaissance in physics and optics. The book immensely influenced the physical and optical studies of several prominent scientists such as Roger Bacon, Johannes Kepler, and Isaac Newton.
Divided into two sessions, the webinar hosts Dr. Mohammed Ali El-Gendy, Professor of Philosophy at Minya University, presenting a research paper titled “Methodological Pluralism in Ibn Al-Haytham’s Optical Research”, followed by Dr. Fatima Ismail, Philosophy of Science Professor at Ain Shams University, delivering a paper titled “The Research of Light and Optics till the Age of Ibn Al-Haytham.” Speakers also include Dr. Maher Abdel Qader, Professor of the History and Philosophy of Science at Alexandria University, who will discuss Ibn Al-Haytham’s Book of Optics, followed by Dr. Mohammed Ahmed El-Sayed, Philosophy of Science Professor at Kuwait University, presenting a paper on Arabs’ scientific revolutions. The webinar will be concluded by Dr. Zubaida Bin Messi, History of Science and Mathematics Professor at Batna University in Algeria, who will tackle the theory of empiricism in Ibn Al-Haytham’s Book of Optics.
