Egyptian Education Reform discussed at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina

Today, the conference on Education Reform in Egypt, organized by the Arab Reform Forum from 8-10 December, begins at 3:00 pm at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.

Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Library of Alexandria, will be giving a keynote speech, which will be followed by a presentation on "A Comprehensive Vision for Education Reform in Egypt” by Dr. Hossam Badrawy, Head of the Education Committee in the People’s Assembly and the principal co-organizer of the conference. Dr. Badrawy’s presentation will focus on issues of management and finance, education reform philosophy, education and development, as well as scientific research and modern technology, and quality indicators. Dr. Amr Salama, Egyptian Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and Dr. Ahmed Gamaleldin, Minister of Education, as well as Dr. Mohamed Abdellah, President of the University of Alexandria, will contribute with their comments and views on issues of developing education in Egypt.

Dr. Serageldin will also present his views on successful international examples of education reform projects with special reference to cases and experiences from different countries, as well as education reform programs sponsored by international organizations such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the World Bank.

The second day of the conference will see the participants divided into eight concurrent sessions, each dealing with one of the following topics:

  • Pre-school education reform
  • Pre-university education reform
  • University education reform
  • Scientific research reform
  • Training programs and continual education reform
  • Illiteracy and adult education reform
  • The identity of education in Egypt
  • The role of libraries and learning aids in the enhancement of education and scientific research
The summation of all discussions of the eight topics will be presented in a plenary session which will be followed by a closing session. According to the Arab Reform Forum standard, a comprehensive report including all discussions will be issued after the conference.
