Dr. Youssef Ziedan Receives an Award from the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS)

Alexandria, 18 January 2006—Dr. Youssef Ziedan, Director of the Manuscript Center at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, received an award from the KFAS for the book, al-Šāmil in Medicine by Ibn al-Nafīs ,published last year in 30 volumes after fifteen years of tedious work.. Celebrating the issuance of al-Šāmil.

The BA held an international festival last April attended by renowned professors of heritage and published a booklet marking this occasion and the works of Dr. Ziedan and another comprising the speeches given during this event honoring Dr. Ziedan. The Award was also given for his work, including, ‘Alā’ al-Dīn (Ibn al-Nafīs) al-Qurašiy: Rediscovery, and Maqāla fī al-Naqras- ‘Treatise on Gout’, by al-Rāziy, published by the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.

Dr. Ziedan received several international awards including, Medical Knowledge and Heritage Authentication Award from the Islamic Organization of Medicine/Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences, and the ‘Abdul-Hamīd Shūmān Prize in the field of social studies (Jordan). Some of Dr. Ziedan’s works (amounting to 48 books) were translated into foreign languages. Last month the Turkish translation of his book Dīwān ‘Abdul Kādir al-Jīlāniy- Sufi poems and Symbolic Writings was issued.
