Aesthetics of Arabic Calligraphy in a Conference and Exhibition at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA)

Alexandra — the BA Calligraphy Center is organizing an international conference entitled Aesthetics of Arabic Calligraphy during the period from 9-11 May 2006.
Dr. Abdel Halim Nureldin, Director of the BA Calligraphy Center and former Secretary General of the Supreme Council for Antiquities stated that the three day conference will discuss different themes related to the aesthetics of Arabic calligraphy and its art. Several distinguished figures from Egypt and the Arab world will participate in the conference including Mr. Youssef Zenon (Iraq), who will deal with the subject of the aesthetics of Arabic calligraphy and our Arab identity; Mr. Mohamed Hassab Allah (Egypt), who will explain some artistic aspects of Arabic calligraphy in ancient and modern days; and Ahmed El-Beshly will talk about the philosophy of the aesthetics of Arabic calligraphy. On the aesthetics of Arabic calligraphy in Islamic architecture, Dr. Ahmed Mufti (Syria) will give a lecture. Dr. Edham Mohamed Hanash (Jordon) will discuss the debates on unity and variety in Arabic calligraphy. On the aesthetics of Arabic calligraphy in Boseiry Mosque, Dr. Khaled Azab, Deputy Director of the Calligraphy Center will give a speech.
During the conference, artists, researchers and pioneers of Arabic calligraphy will be honored, those honored will include Said Ibrahim, Mohamed Hosni, Mohamed Abdel Kader, and Abdel Razek Salem. Mr. Roteil added that the names of the Arabic calligraphy competition winners will be announced during the conference.
Concerning the international exhibition, Mr. Mohamed Roteil, the exhibition coordinator, stated that the exhibition will be held on the fringes of the conference for 11 days. The exhibition will comprise 60 paintings from the Mohamed Ibrahim Association for Arabic Calligraphy, the General Egyptian Association for Arabic Calligraphy, and a group of artists from the Arab and Islamic world.
As part of the exhibition, a workshop will be organized for a group of students from different grades, and some students of Mohamed Ibrahim School for Arabic Calligraphy in Alexandria.
