“The Ancient Mediterranean” in a lecture at the BA

Alexandria — the Alexandria and Mediterranean Research Center (Alex-Med) is organizing a lecture entitled “the Ancient Mediterranean” on Monday, 4 September 2006, which is the third lecture in the cycle of lectures “Thinking the Mediterranean”. The lectures create a channel for dialogue, exchange and cultural interaction in the Mediterranean.
Dr. Jean Yves Empereur (from North Mediterranean), Director of Research, Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), and Director of the Centre d"Etudes Alexandrines and Dr. Aicha Ben Abed (from South Mediterranean), Director of Monuments and Sites at the Institut National du Patrimoine in Tunis will give the lecture. The speakers will discuss the history of the Mediterranean and the incidents witnessed by the Ancient Mediterranean cities whether culturally, scientifically, commercially, economically, or politically. Due to the strong mutual exchange among those cities, they were known as “cities of the Mediterranean Lake”.
“Thinking the Mediterranean” is a cycle of seven lectures, which started in May 2006 and will continue until May 2007, organized by the Alexandria and Mediterranean Research center (Alex-Med) at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. In order to foster high quality discussion, the lectures hosted prominent scholars and writers of the region. The lectures will cover a number of vital issues including: the Mediterranean - a strategic question; the Mediterranean among cultures; cities of the Mediterranean, the Mediterranean - a religious space.
The lecture will start at 19:00 hrs at the Middle Hall, BA Conference Center.
