A Peace Convention

At the invitation of H.E. Dr. Suzanne Mubarak, the President of the Institute for Peace Studies, a brainstorming session on building a protective environment for civilians in armed conflicts will be held at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina on 9 January 2007.
Concerned with and disturbed by the sufferings of civilians caused by the continuous Israeli military practices committed on the occupied Palestinian territories and by the Israeli attacks on Lebanon, Mrs. Mubarak convened a brainstorming session that took place in September 2006 in Paris to examine ways and means of reinforcing the protection of civilians during armed conflicts. Moreover, a group of experts was asked to present recommendations for a plan of action at the Alexandria Meeting.
Many dignitaries are attending the Alexandria meeting, which is chaired, also, by H.E. Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak. H.E. Sheikha Sabika of Bahrain, H.E. Princess Basma of Jordan, Dr. Boutros Ghali– Secretary General of the United Nations, and Jacques Forster– the Vice President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) are among the attendants. In addition, eminent professors and experts as well as representatives of the United Nations, of Amnesty International, of the International Crisis Group, and of the European Union will be attending the meeting.
On 10 January 2007, H.E. Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak, the chairman of the Board of Trustees, will chair the second meeting of the Board of the Institute for Peace Studies. The Board includes many national and international figures. Among the attendants are vice chairman Ismail Serageldin, Dr. Aleya-Bindari, Alyson J.K. Bailes, Prof. Amr Abdallah, Dr. Assia Bensalah Aloui, Prof. El-Sayed Yassin, Dr. Georges Abi-Saab, Prof. Ghassan Salame, Dr. James Jonah, Justice Nabil El- Araby, Mrs. Rama Mani, Prof. Shibley Tehhami, Dr. Soliman Abd el-Moniem, and H.E. Aly Maher.
