Alexandria— On the occasion of the Alexandrina International Book Fair, the BA will present the BA's latest digital occurrence, the second of its kind worldwide following that of the USA, Print on Demand: the BA’s Espresso Book Machine. The project, first in the Middle East and the Arab world, is to design and implement an innovative business model for the e-book supply chain for Arabic books.
The machine stores thousands of books in digital format easily retrieved on demand. The purchaser can access a list of thousands of books stored in the machine. Upon clicking on a certain title, the bounded book will be ready in ten minutes. The machine is also useful in printing out of print books, and is helpful in the circulation of books issued in other countries. The new system also saves the cost of printing a book, that might not be that profitable; saves space; and ensures quick circulation.
The Espresso Book Machine will be placed in Cairo, Assiout, Dubai, and Rabat. Books, upon issuance, books will be sent to the machine via the internet, to be printed and bounded upon a purchaser. The new system is a combination of digital and paper publishing. Readers can also re-print periodicals and journals of distinguished authors and intellectuals.
The opening of the fair will also feature signing of an agreement between the BA and Mohamed Rashad, Chairman, Lebanese Egyptian Press, and Ahmed El-Kazaz representing Adel El-Moalem, El-Sherouk Press to send all their publications to the machine. Negotiations are underway with Dar El-Maaref Press to join the print on demand project.
