The BA hosted today Thursday, 26 July 2007, the celebration of the World Population Day and the release of the World Population Report 2007 "Unleashing the Potential of Urban Growth", under the auspices of Alexandria Governorate.
This is the first time the World Population Report 2007 is released outside Cairo. The celebration started with the opening session, in which Dr. Salam Morsi, Under Secretary, Ministry of Health and Population, and Dr. Faisal Abdel Kader, Resident Representative of the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) in Cairo spoke. Dr. Faisal stated that the population problem is now taking an international and strategic dimension, thus, the celebration is an alarm for policy makers all over the world on the real potential of the problem.
It is worth mentioning that the World Population Report 2007 tackles the demographic processes behind urban growth and tries to understand what it needs on the policies level. The Report studies the consequences of fighting poverty to achieve sustainability.
For the second successive year, the UNFPA presents a supplement for youth entitled "Growing Up Youth" along with World Population Report 2007. The supplement contains stories by young girls and boys brought up in developing countries.
