The Institute for Peace Studies Signs an Agreement with the Alexandria University

Alexandria— Ambassador Ali Maher, Director of the Institute for Peace Studies, and Dr. Hassan Nodier Khairallah, President, Alexandria University, signed a cooperation agreement on Sunday, 29 July 2007. The agreement between the two parties includes exchange of experts, information, and documents in the fields of peace studies, international law, human rights to support and develop the activities and studies of the Institute. As part of the agreement, the Institute for Peace Studies and Alexandria University will co-organize international conferences, meetings, workshops on both the international and regional levels.

Ambassador Ali Maher stated that a yearly program will be developed to ensure that the two parties exchange documents and information, and strengthen other means of cooperation. The agreement entered into effect as of the date of its signature.

He announced that the cooperation channels will include granting Alexandria University students Masters degree in Peace studies, provided that a student obtains an 11 month scholarship in the University of Costa Rica, under the supervision of the Institute for Peace Studies. Ambassador Maher also praised the non governmental cooperation between the Institute and the University. He added that the agreement is a step towards openness on other civil society organizations as well as other Egyptian universities.

Dr. Nodier stated that the agreement is one of the most important agreements enhancing the cultural role of universities in the life of students and professors, especially in the field of peace studies, human rights, and conflict settlements. He added that the University will support the Institute in the academic area through university programs, and the participation of university professors in the Institute courses. The Institute will also support the post graduate studies in the University through scholarships and opportunities for studies abroad.

The agreement was signed in Alexandria University headquarters, in the presence of Dr. Azza El-Kholy, Deputy Director, Institute for Peace Studies, Dr. Amr Abdullah, Deputy President for Academic Affairs, University of Peace, Costa Rica, Dr. Adel Mohamadien, Deputy President for Society Service and Environment Development, Alexandria University, Dr. Hind Hanafy, Deputy Director for Post Graduate Studies and Research, Alexandria University, and Dr. Osama El-Foly, Dean, Faculty of Law, Alexandria University, and a group of media men and journalists.

Dr. Amr Abdullah stated that Alexandria University is the first Arab University to cooperate with the University of Peace, Costa Rica, affiliated to the United Nations, as part of an international program to disseminate the culture of peace, adopted by the University in the Arab world, African continent, and South Asia, funded by the Netherlands (3 million dollars). The University holds activities in 36 countries, including 6 countries in the Middle East, namely: Egypt, Jordon, Kuwait, Iraq, Palestine, and Sudan.
