Alexandria— The BA is holding from 23-24 October 2007, "Women in Science" a Conference to shed lights on the role of women in this field. In the course of the two-day Conference, the Library is inviting eminent scientists from all over the world to discuss various pertinent and pressing women issues.

In the world of globalization, more emphasis is being put on enhancing science and technology in the developing nations. A goal that could only be achieved through the mobilization of all human resources in these nations; the recognition of the role of women as key players is crucial towards the success of this endeavor.

The Conference chose several themes related to women involvement in science, represented in "Education of Women", including biases, segregated schooling, streaming into arts and sciences, and disciplinary biases.

The second theme will discuss "Teaching and Research" including universities, and research in commercial labs. The Third theme will focus on "Women in Executive and Managerial Positions" including public/private sector, education, NGOs, foundations, academies, commercials, and think tanks.

Balancing home and career is among the obstacles facing women’s progress in science and a hindrance to their success, thus, the fourth theme tackles "the Social Context" as well as remuneration and promotion, career counseling and mentoring, and societal pressures.

Finally, the fifth theme relates to "Applications of Science to benefit Women" whether women in rural areas, women in urban areas, and also tackles the environment, employment and empowerment. Recent statistics show that only one third of the women’s population work in medicine, engineering, and science, whereas the rest work in the agriculture, handicrafts, and other professions.

The Conference seeks to formulate recommendations to enhance women status and to eliminate obstacles in her way to scientific research, and to convince the Arab governments with the concept of social diversity when planning for scientific research, and the presence of women in leadership positions in the fields of research.
