The Bibliotheca Alexandrina, in cooperation with Art D'Égypte, inaugurated the second edition of the international art exhibition Tale of Two Cities: Athens and Alexandria, which runs until 4 November, in the presence of representatives of international artistic and cultural bodies, diplomats, and a number of BA officials.

The exhibition aims to strengthen relations between Egypt and Greece by creating a visual dialogue that explores the rich artistic and cultural fabric of the common heritage shared between the two countries, and by showcasing the works of Greek and Egyptian contemporary artists that draw inspiration from the artistic heritage of both peoples.

Gamal Hosny, Head of the BA Art Exhibitions and Collections Department, said that since the revival of the BA in 2002, it has held hundreds of cultural events, especially in the field of visual arts. He stated that the Library has worked to be a producer and distributor of authentic culture, as it has acted as a presenter for events organized by entities working in the field of visual art from Egypt and abroad.

Nadine Abdel Ghaffar, founder of Art d'Egypt, said that this edition highlights the rich history and cultural dialogue between Alexandria and Athens. She stressed that the exhibition is an opportunity to celebrate the common cultural heritage that continues to influence the present and strengthen future ties.

Participating artists include Omar Toussoun, Said Badr, Esméralda Kosmatopoulos, Jean Boghossian, Antonella Leoni, Emilio Ferro, Hazem Elmestikawy, Karim El Hayawan, Sheikh Rashid Al Khalifa, Artur Lescher, Micha Cattui, Costas Varotsos and, for the first time, artist Hassan Ragab. Ragab's AI-generated video installation will delve into the historical and cultural connections between Greece and Egypt, exploring how their shared heritage has influenced art, architecture, and philosophy over the centuries.

This edition of the exhibition follows the success of the first edition that was hosted last June by the Acropolis Museum in Athens, under the auspices of the Egyptian Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Egyptian Embassy in Greece.

The artworks are displayed in various locations within the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, including the outdoor Plaza of Civilizations.

The exhibition is open to the public until 4 November 2024.
