Alexandria, 25 October 2005—For the first time in Egypt, the Taha Hussein Library at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, for the blind and visually impaired, is organizing a celebration entitled White Cane Safety Day that will take place on 9 November 2005. This is in honor of the white cane, now recognized as the blind person’s mobility aid worldwide.
The celebration aims to raise awareness about the importance and the use of the white cane. It features a number of events including a musical performance by the choir of Al Nour School for Blind Girls; an exhibition for clay artwork by the partially-sighted and blind; as well as a photographic exhibition of the white cane and its usage.
The White Cane Safety Day was first initiated by the World Blind Union (WBU), the only organization entitled to speak on behalf of blind and partially-sighted persons of the world. The WBU represents 180 million blind and visually-impaired persons from about 600 different organizations in 158 countries. This celebration, organized by the WBU, takes place every year on 15 October.
