The Saïd Foundation is a UK registered charity and the successor organization to the long-running Karim Rida Said Foundation. It seeks to improve the lives of disadvantaged children and young people in its priority countries of Syria, Palestine, Jordan and Lebanon.

Support to Higher Education

The Foundation’s work aims to encourage the development of the Middle East through the education of young people for whom such opportunities would not otherwise be available and to support the development of disadvantaged children. The annual budget for the whole program of supporting higher education is around £500,000.
Type of Support
Scholarships
● Study for a Master's Degree in the UK (20-30 scholarships each year)
The Saïd Foundation is able to provide full or partial scholarships for Master’s degrees at universities around the UK depending on the level of financial need or whether other grants are available to applicants. While the Foundation is able to provide full funding, it also provides matching funds. Scholarships are for one year, in any subject, for taught courses.
● Study for a PhD/DPhil
The Foundation will consider applications for PhDs/DPhils at Oxford and Cambridge Universities. Full information on these scholarships are posted on the Foundation’s website.
Duration of Support
● Masters’ scholarships: one year
● PhD scholarships: three years
Eligibility Criteria
● Study for a Master's Degree in the UK
Applicants should:
o Demonstrate that the chosen course of study will be of use to the home country or the Middle East region.

o Be a Jordanian, Lebanese, Syrian or Palestinian national (including Palestinians inside Israel) and reside in the Middle East.
o Have a good first degree.
o Have at least two years of work experience.

● Study for a PhD
As the Foundation’s funds are limited, and it receives many applications for scholarships each year, the Board of Trustees sets criteria and priorities for applicants. The Foundation offers a number of scholarships each academic year at Oxford and Cambridge. There are no quotas per country, and scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit. Each application is carefully considered by the trustees and staff of the Foundation, and the best candidates overall are selected. The Foundation bases its decisions on academic record, financial need, likelihood to succeed in the UK, usefulness of subject to the applicant’s country, motivation, future career intentions, practical ability to apply the knowledge gained in the UK on return to the Middle East and personality. The Foundation’s criteria are as follows:

o Applications are restricted to candidates who are Jordanian, Lebanese, Palestinian or Syrian;
o Scholarships are offered for postgraduate study or training only. Applications for undergraduate study are not considered.
o Applications from candidates who will be forty years old or more at the beginning of the 2012/13 academic year are not considered;
o Evidence of proficiency in English is required by the Foundation, and must be at the level required by Oxford or Cambridge;
o Applicants must hold a first degree of a high enough standard to indicate that they are likely to complete their proposed course of study at Oxford or Cambridge successfully;
o Applicants cannot be considered if they have not followed the proper application procedures for Oxford or Cambridge;
o Candidates must be in genuine need of partial or full funding;
o Successful applicants are required to sign a binding undertaking to apply the skills and knowledge they have gained in one of the Foundation's target countries (Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine and Syria).
o Priority will be given to applicants with work experience whose studies will benefit their field of work. Candidates must have at least two years work experience, but exceptional applicants who do not meet this requirement may be considered;
o Applications from candidates whose siblings or spouses are currently being supported by the Foundation are not considered.
Application Procedures
● Study for a Master's Degree in the UK

o Application procedures and criteria for all grants are available on the Foundation’s website www.saidfoundation.org

Applying for Oxford University

Applicants are requested to complete the Application Form for Graduate Study to be considered for entry to a postgraduate course at Oxford University. There is an application fee of GBP£25 for each course you apply for.

Applicants can apply online through a printed application form. Both are available at http://www.ox.ac.uk/feesandfunding. Alternatively the applicant can request a printed form by emailing graduate.admissions@admin.ox.ac.uk, or write to Graduate Admissions and Funding, University Offices, Wellington Square, Oxford, OX1 2JD, UK, or contact +(44)1865-288000.

This form also allows the applicant to apply for Said Foundation scholarships by selecting the Said Foundation box in the funding section of the Application Form for Graduate Study. For that reason, applicants should refer to the subject entry in the Graduate Studies Prospectus or visit www.ox.ac.uk/graduate/apply for further details
o Samples of written work (such as essays) that are required by your department.
o Evidence of proficiency in English is required by the Foundation and must be at the level required by Oxford or Cambridge;
