Presentation Abstract:
Since the establishment of the oldest university that still exists in Egypt, namely Al-Azhar, more than 1000 years ago, the university model has evolved through many stages. Its role stepped up from merely educating young people in a specific stock of knowledge to a pivotal role in the development of the societies. It has changed from being about intellectual pursuit, predominantly for its own sake, and educating a very privileged minority to a broader role for the contemporary mass university. Moreover, universities gradually have becoming more coherent with the market and society.
World around us is changing at tremendous speed. A new dimension has been created. This is the Global Dimension. It is characterized by the fast and diversified communications. World is becoming borderless, interconnected, and interdependent. We can now jump daily from the local to the global. This has impacts not only on universities' staff and student flows, but also on the way universities work, cooperate, and interact with the local and global communities.
Universities are the main creators of knowledge that leads to understanding, and ultimately to wisdom. Many societies are changing from material-based societies to knowledge based ones. Knowledge based societies are by definition: those societies sharing knowledge reality. This is an act for the democratization of scientific knowledge.
Hence, it is expected from a university to continue the dissemination of knowledge and pursue its implementations for the prosperity of the society. In addition to creating the new knowledge, universities' researchers make breakthroughs and innovations. And it is imperative to say that universities are essential part of the fabric of our civilization.
One of the proven effective tools for knowledge dissemination in societies is the science centers. Members of the society may acquire first hand knowledge by knowing: how, what, why, when, .etc. And so they develop positive attitudes and go through cognitive learning.
In accomplishing the role of the universities as knowledge disseminators and services providers to the society, they should participate in the creation and running of the science centers and the enhancement of their role. Universities will also benefit greatly from the presence of the science centers.
The Arabian Gulf University in the Kingdom of Bahrain is one of the believers of its role in establishing science centers in the Gulf Region. It has established more than a decade ago, within its compass, a small scale anatomy science museum. This is benefiting not only ordinary members of the society but also its own newly enrolled students.
