Dr
Tengku Nasariah Ibrahim
Member, the International Program Committee, SCWC - Petrosains (The Discovery Center)
Biography:
As an Industrial Economics graduate fresh from the University of Nottingham, England, Tengku Nasariah Tengku Syed Ibrahim began her long and distinguished career first with the National Oil Company of Malaysia, PETRONAS. Starting off as Planning/Scheduling Engineer in PETRONAS Carigali, the exploration & production arm of PETRONAS, Tengku cut her teeth on various oil & gas infrastructure projects, gaining valuable insights into the petroleum industry.
In the years to follow, she rose steadily through the ranks to attain the position of Project Services Manager in 1995, in the internationally renowned Malaysian Liquefied Natural Gas (MLNG) Dua Plant Project. This project positioned Malaysia as a leading supplier of LNG in the world.
Tengku’s career took an unexpected and dramatic turn when, in the following year, she was handpicked to lead and project-manage not one but two prestigious, world-class public institutions: the construction of the PETRONAS Philharmonic Concert Hall and Petrosains The Discovery Centre. Built simultaneously and in fast-track mode, both projects saw completion within schedule & cost. Today they stand proudly within the PETRONAS Twin Towers, symbols of PETRONAS’ contribution to the nation and signal Tengku’s sudden and welcome entry into the world of Science Centres.
Continuing into the operations phase, Tengku was appointed GM/CEO of Petrosains in 1999, the same year it opened its doors to the public. A lover of classical music and herself a trained classical pianist, Tengku is a firm believer in the seamlessness of science, art and music. Her life and career would seem to be a perfect reflection of this philosophy: she is the CEO of a Science Centre, the Director of the Galeri PETRONAS (a premier Malaysian Art Gallery), a mother of two growing sons and to top it all off, she is married to a classical musician!
