Presentation Abstract:
New work at the Exploratorium in Science engagement
The Exploratorium was founded by Frank Oppenheimeron the principal of democratizing science and making sure that everyone had access to the empowering knowledge of science and access to using science as a tool to make decisions about themselves and the world. Frank also started with an empty building and created a powerful Research and Development engine, connected to scientists, artists and educators, to fill the space with learning experiences. Today we continue to create new learning experiences andsharethese exhibits and programs with museums around the world.
We recently partnered with NASA and a Chinese TV station to broadcast the solar eclipse from NW China to an overnight audience at the Exploratorium, on NASA TV, to museums around the world, and to a virtual audience in Second Life. We also just launched a web site called Evidence: How Do We Know What We Know, a resource designed for online users to engage with the processes of science. It also includes My Evidence, a multi-user, multi-lingual online application where users examine how they themselves construct knowledge about the world.
We are working on two new programs, PIE and Tinkering, which to engage visitors in a combination of art and science constructions that get them asking questions and engaging in experimentation. Both of these programs use very appealing material rich open-ended explorations. The materials are simple, yet the staging and facilitation requires great planning.
Through these four programs I will provide a glimpse of the R&D work that the Exploratorium is doing in advancing non-traditional science communications and how we are sharing this work with museums around the world.
