Minister of Manpower Discusses Illegal Immigration at the BA

The BA Dialogue Forum hosted HE Mrs. Aisha Abdel-Hady, Minister of Manpower and Immigration, in a lecture on “The Dimensions of Immigration”. Dr. Fathy Abu Aiana, Professor, Faculty of Arts, Alexandria University moderated the seminar, which was attended by General Adel Labib, Governor of Alexandria, and Ambassador Hagar Islambouly, Head of the BA External Relations Sector.
HE Aisha Abdel-Hady spoke on one of the most pressing issues concerning the Egyptian society, especially youth. She stated that the Ministry developed a database of all youth applying to immigrate to Arab or European countries, and also maintains a reference of businessmen abroad seeking Egyptian labor in an attempt to create legal channels for immigration.
She also mentioned that the European Training Institute supports the Ministry in training Egyptian youth to sustain the needs of European labor market, which require skills and experience.
On recruiting Egyptian labor abroad, HE Aisha Abdel-Hady stated that the Ministry will sign an agreement with the Greek Ministry of Labor in early 2008 to control the process of organizing labor to Greece. She spoke on establishing a national agency for recruitment that should be responsible for locating job opportunities for Egyptian youth in the European labor market to control illegal immigration.
About the Ministry’s measures to eliminate youth illegal immigration, HE Aisha Abdel-Hady stated that the Ministry is in the process of amending the laws governing immigration and protecting Egyptians abroad. She added that the Ministry produced a documentary on illegal immigration with the aim to spread awareness among public on the risks and hazards of illegal immigration.
At the end of the seminar, HE Mrs. Abdel-Hady referred to the initiatives taken by Egyptian businessmen to recruit youth within Egypt, and to the Ministry’s efforts in locating job opportunities abroad, amounting to 360,000 jobs through legal channels.
It is worth mentioning that the Dialogue Forum holds two seminars monthly hosting eminent Egyptian intellectuals tackling different issues pertaining the Egyptian society in particular, and the Arab world in general.
