The BA Holds “Renewal and Reform in Modern Islamic Thinking” Conference

The BA is holding a conference entitled “Renewal and Reform in Modern Islamic Thinking” from 19 to 21 January 2009. With several thinkers and scholars participating, the Conference aims at an objective reading of renewal and reform projects in the Islamic world during the last two centuries, through the contribution of their owners, without any relation to a certain age.
The Conference aspires to re-read the works of pioneers and their reform and renewal projects, as well as identifying contemporary influences on trends, systems and legislations, in an effort to create a new contemporary reform project and to renew the current Islamic thinking by activating its potentials, discovering strong points to trigger and pinpointing week aspects to strengthen.
The Conference also connects all current trends, with various ideologies and locations, to reach a unified aim and to effectively participate in shaping the nation’s future.
The Conference discusses several themes:, namely: renewal and reform schools: pioneers and ideologies; the debate about Islam and the public field; renewal and the dilemmas of civilization; the dilemmas of tyranny—freedom; and finally renewal and reform between the past and the future: an analysis of the contemporary Islamic discourse. The closing session will include a discussion entitled “What’s left and what’s next?”.
