Alexandria, 29 December 2005— The Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) received a valuable donation from the AFESD, in accordance with the role of the BA as a pioneer institution in culture, scientific research, and arts. The donation includes different AFESD publications; among which is a book entitled, Quarter of a Century in Development, (1974-1998). The book is an overview on the Fund"s establishment process, historical background, objectives, organizational structure, administration, and resources. The book also tackles the manner through which the fund functions, an assessment of its performance, and a comparison between its objectives and achievements.

The collection also comprises, World Resources: International Environmental Guide, the eighth issue of which was translated by the AFESD, reflecting a collective endeavor by the World Resources Institute, the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), and the World Bank (WB). These international bodies aim at giving credibility to the world report series, and providing researchers with precise information on environment and development. Following the issuance of the first issue of the World Resources Report"s English version in 1986, the AFESD started the Arabic translation of reports since 1978, in an attempt to provide political officials, researchers, and NGOs with important data in Arabic.

As part of the donation, the Unified Arab Economic Report (2000-2004) is a unified report prepared by the Arab Monetary Fund (AMF), the Secretariat of the Arab League, and other specialized Arab organizations presenting economic development in the Arab World. This report serves as a database on the Arab world economies, and a background for Arab ministers of finance and economics, governors of central banks, Arab monetary institutions" officials, and other concerned figures to discuss important issues facing the Arab nation; whether concerning the relations between Arab states; or relations between Arab states and the whole world. The collection includes publications in English and French.

The collection is among the best donated to the Library, commensurate with the BA"s mission in promoting dialogue with the other and strengthening the BA"s relations with different cultural institutions, centers and academies throughout the world.
