Opening Ceremony Program

        Alexandria, 20th October 2015: 1001 Inventions, the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology and the Library of Alexandria launched today the blockbuster award-winning 1001 Inventions exhibition.

        The launch took place at the Conference Centre of the Library of Alexandria led by ex-Egyptian Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab and representatives from the three partner organizations hosting the exhibition.

        The interactive 1001 Inventions exhibition themed “Discovering Our Past – Inspiring Our Future” highlights over one thousand years of scientific and cultural achievements made during the Golden Age of Muslim Civilization. The exhibition will be open for visitors until December 15 at the Conference Centre at the Library of Alexandria.

         The exhibition will features interactive exhibitions, educational films, live performances, hands-on workshops and educational resources all suited for a family audience.

          Dr. Mahmoud Sakr, President of the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology said:

          The exhibition highlights through its 7 zones achievements and discoveries from the Golden Age in a variety of fields such as engineering, agriculture, medicine and surgery, geography and marine science, astronomy, optics, and education. All the exhibition’s materials and films are in both Arabic and English, and are carefully designed to be appealing to a family audience.

          The exhibition is created by the UK-based not-for-profit organization that develops and delivers global campaigns to raise awareness of the contributions to science, technology and culture from the Golden Age of Muslim Civilization. Through strategic partnerships with corporations, governments and international organizations, 1001 Inventions has engaged with over 200 million people around the world.

             The award-winning 1001 Inventions exhibition will be in residence at the Conference Centre of the Library of Alexandria from 20 October to 15 December.

          The exhibition highlights a thousand years of scientific, technological and cultural achievements from the seventh century onwards, a period known as the “Golden Age of Muslim Civilization” stretching from Spain to China.

           Exhibitions produced by 1001 Inventions have already received more than three million visitors at blockbuster residencies cities around the world breaking visitor number records in London, New York, Los Angeles, Washington DC, Doha, Abu Dhabi and Istanbul.

1001 Inventions Exhibition Concurrent Activities

1- International Year of Light Celebration
Date: Thursday 12 November 2015
Time: 9:00 am till 2:00 pm
Location: BA Plaza

The Planetarium Science Center is organizing a one day festivity to celebrate the International Year of Light as declared by the UNESCO that the year 2015 is the international year of light. The day will highlight Ibn Al-Haytham contributions in the fields of optics and light. The one day activities compromise hands-on workshops highlighting the role of light in several fields in our lives; like, medicine and technology and also applying 1001 Inventions exhibition slogan: “Discovering Our Past…Inspiring Our Future”. The festivity will also include entertaining science performances: light show, shadows play, mini exhibition containing one of Ibn Al Haytham’s rarest manuscripts. In addition to that, there is a complete zone dedicated to commemorate Al-Haytham’s inventions through hands on workshops.

2- On-site Workshops
During 1001 Inventions Exhibition display at the BA during the period 20 October till 15 December 2015, interactive activities will be offered through various hands-on workshops:

• Quick Activities
Coloring and connecting the dots sheets, and quizzes will be distributed at the exhibition entrance in both Arabic and English languages.

• Activity Zones Workshops
A specialized team of animators will perform five workshops related to the exhibitions’ five zones: Engineering, World, Universe, School and Hospital. One of the workshops will highlight the fabrication of selected ancient tools used by famous inventors, who lived during the Golden age of Islam.

• Ibn Al-Haytham Workshop
This workshop will be performed during the international day of light festivity. It will focus on the Camera Obscure and Ibn Al-Haytham theories in the field of optics.

3- Off-site Activities

• Schools Workshops
Workshops related to the exhibition’s five zones: Engineering, World, Universe, School and Hospital will be offered at schools and clubs upon prior reservation.


• Marketing Campaign and Activities
Date: 29-30 October/ 26-28 November/ 3-5 December 2015
Time: 10:00 am till 10:00 pm
Location: City Center, Alexandria

The campaign includes hands-on activities for children. The campaigns will include workshops related to 1001 Inventions Exhibition. The BA will also perform workshops utilizing the ScienCycle, a tricycle that offers simplified scientific activities in an intriguingly entertaining manner.
