On 24 September 2014, India’s Mars Orbiter spacecraft was successfully placed into orbit around Mars, the Red Planet.
This is the first Indian Mars-bound probe. India has also become the first spacefaring nation to send an orbiter on its first endeavor to explore Mars.
The mission will study the terrains, surface composition and atmosphere of Mars. It will also demonstrate various techniques of interplanetary spaceflight.
The Mars Orbiter is a solar-powered, cube-shaped vehicle, measuring 1.5 m on a side. It launched on 5 November 2013, from the Satish Dhawan Space Center in India. Mars Orbiter is also known as Mangalyaan “Mars-craft”.
