Biodiversity, Why Should We Care?

From: 04 July 2010 To: 08 July 2010

This workshop introduces students to the meaning of biodiversity and its significance in our lives on three main levels; ecosystems, species and genetic diversity. The workshop also focuses on different ecosystems all around the world, with emphasis on Egypt. Students will be able to do activities such as “build your own ecosystem” to explore animals, plants and environmental resources in a number of different ecosystems. Moreover, the workshop aims at acquainting students with nearby protected areas, off-site conservation centers and local management techniques that foster biodiversity conservation. 


Marine Biodiversity

From: 27 June 2010 To: 01 July 2010 Age Group: 9 -12 years

 

It is almost certain that life originated in the oceans. Today, marine biodiversity is threatened by human activities. This workshop introduces children to marine life in Egypt through a variety of activities showcasing the nature of marine organisms. An outdoor activity, the workshop includes a trip to the aquarium.

  


Astrolabe

From: 21 June 2010 To: 07 September 2010 Age Group: 9 -16 years

 

A historical instrument, the astrolabe was used for centuries by astronomers and navigators to locate the positions of the Sun, Moon, planets, and stars, as well as determine latitude, longitude, and time of day. During this workshop, students learn the history and uses of the astrolabe, as well as make their own.

 


Recycling

From: 21 June 2010 To: 07 September 2010 Age Group: 6 -9 years

 

Learning crafts develops imagination and creativity, as well as observation and handiness; it also promotes positive self-esteem. This workshop offers small children suitable, simple and fun crafts. Children also learn how to make use of available materials instead of getting rid of them.

  


Look What I Made!

From: 21 June 2010 To: 24 June 2010 Age Group: 6 -8 years

Learning to make things plays an important role in how children develop the skills necessary to learn how to read and write. Practicing a craft also promotes positive self-esteem. This workshop contains crafts suitable for children, 6-8 years of age, in an entertaining way. Students will also learn how to make use of surrounding materials instead of get rid of them.

    


Mechanics Workshop

From: 25 April 2010 To: 29 April 2010 Age Group: 12 -16 years

 

 

Simple machines are the foundation of all mechanical devices. Learn about these simple, yet fundamental machines, such as pulleys, gears, levers and inclined plane.

Gravity

From: 11 April 2010 To: 15 April 2010 Age Group: 9 -12 years

Gravity is the pull that objects have on other objects around them. All objects have gravity, which means that they are always trying to pull other objects toward them. The larger an object, the stronger its pull. Because Earth itself is the largest object in our world, the pull of its gravity is the strongest we can feel.
      


Volcanoes

From: 04 April 2010 To: 08 April 2010 Age Group: 8 -12 years

 

A volcano is an opening in a planet's surface that allows lava to escape, as well as other hot molten rocks and poisonous gases, from below the surface. Volcanoes are formed where there is stretching and thinning of the Earth's crust. Earthquakes also often occur in volcanic regions, by the movement of magma in volcanoes. Such earthquakes can serve as an early warning of volcanic eruptions. This workshop is about Volcanoes and Earthquakes. It consists of experiments about the topology of the Earth, the equipment used to measure earthquakes, the reasons  for volcanic eruptions, and the composition of lava. 

 


Astronomy Workshop

Astronomy is one of the oldest sciences. It is the scientific study of celestial bodies and phenomena. It is concerned with the evolution, physics, chemistry, meteorology, and motion of celestial objects, as well as the formation and development of the universe. In this classic workshop, students learn more about the Solar System through a variety of fun experiments, including the making of a solar system model and the construction of a rocket!
