Women in Science (WIS)

To highlight the importance of the role of women, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina celebrated organized the “Women in Science” conference that took place 23-24 October 2007. The Library invited eminent persons and practicing scientists from all over the world to discuss various pertinent and pressing issues. This year, the Bibliotheca is organizing “Women in Science 2011” conference in celebration of the centennial celebration of Marie Curie’s Nobel prize in chemistry, the eminent woman scientist.

In addition to that, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina hosted the Secretariat Office of the Arab Network for Women in Science and Technology (ANWST) starting 3 February 2010. The message of the Arab Network of Women in Science and Technology can be summarized in the emphasis on the effective participation of women in science and technology and in building a whole scientific society which is capable of facing the challenges of sustainable development in the Arab World.

ANWST is a network set up at the Gulf University; its President, Dr. Rafia Ghubash, is the Former President of the Gulf University. According to the ANWST mandate, the secretariat office has to rotate between the 22 Arab countries. Accordingly, with the consent of Dr. Ghubash, ANWST Secretariat has been relocated to the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) to be working under the umbrella of the BA, UNESCO Cairo office and the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS).

Science Club Initiative (SCI)

The Science Clubs Initiative (SCI) offers hands-on facilities and programs in selected public primary and preparatory schools in Alexandria and neighboring governorates to introduce enquiry-based practical science education. The initiative is designed to be replicated throughout Egypt in the near future to encourage students to pursue careers in science and technology.
