Earth Passes Perihelion
08 July 2007

On 7 July 2007, Earth passed aphelion, the farthest point from the Sun along Earth's elliptical orbit. At aphelion, Earth is 3.4% farther from the Sun than at Perihelion, Earth's minimum distance from the Sun.

Earth passed perihelion on 3 January 2007. It was approximately 147 million km from the Sun. The aphelion distance is approximately 152 million km. The circumference of Earth's orbit is nearly 1 billion km. Earth orbits the Sun with an average orbital speed of approximately 30 km/s, or 108,000 km/hr.
