4th FLL in Egypt competition finale
30 December 2008

Under the auspices of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, the BA Planetarium Science Center has organized the FIRST-LEGO League (FLL) in Egypt competition for the fourth year in a row. This year, the theme of the competition was “Climate Connections”, where participants embarked on an exploration of the Earth’s climate; they were able to discover the links between science, people, resources, and communities; they revealed how we learn about past climates and delve into questions surrounding our current and future climatic conditions.

The FIRST LEGO League (FLL) is the outcome of an impressive alliance between FIRST and LEGO Companies. FLL is an international program for children, 9-14 years of age. It combines a hands-on, interactive robotics program and a research presentation with a sports-like atmosphere. Teams consist of up to 10 members and focus on team-building, problem-solving, creativity, and analytical thinking, in addition to scientific advancement to solve the FLL challenge.

Every September, FLL teams around the world are provided with the annual challenge. The Challenge is based on a set of real-world problems facing scientists today. It has two parts: a robot game and a project. In the robot game; teams design, build, program, and test autonomous robots that must perform a series of tasks, or missions. In the project; teams conduct research and develop compelling presentations that relate to a problem facing the world today. The teams have two to three months to accomplish their prototype and get ready for demonstrating their work in the competition finale.

The fourth FLL in Egypt competition finale took place on 27 28 December 2008 at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. On the first day, each team had 5 minutes to present their research, 4 minutes for the teamwork test, and 10 minutes for the Robot Design test. After that, each team had two un-scored trials. On the second day, each team had three official trials; the highest score was taken in order to determine the winning team.

Participants, in the form of 20 teams from all over Egypt, competed in all stages with enthusiasm and zest, introducing their skills and innovative ideas to the encouraging audiences.

The Winner of the First Place was the "Triple Legend" team with a high score of 431 points. The winning team will be representing Egypt in the international competition in the USA.
