Going North, Documentary Screening
16 February 2009

A 45-minute documentary, Going North tackles the issue of climate change and how it is affecting life on Earth.

The climate has been changing for billions of years. Humans came onto the scene and soon transformed the planet.

With every passing day, the world is getting warmer. There are tantalizing clues all around us that things are changing fast.

Climate change is happening so fast that we even notice it from one year to the next. Accelerated beyond all measures by our lifestyle, the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is continually on the increase, raising with it the temperature of the Earth’s surface.

Global warming looks set to produce ever more violent storms, there will be far more energy in the atmosphere and the winds will be much stronger … sometimes devastatingly so.

But the Earth’s climate is also regulated by living creatures: how do animals and plants manage to influence the climate machine? And what is happening at a much smaller, microscopic scale?

It is up to us to put things right, looking after the forests in a more natural way. Lowland species can respond to global warming by going north, but what happens in the mountains?

Going north … the great escape towards a sustainable climate; going north, the need, and the chance, to survive by moving along the green highway of the Earth.

Biological corridors are the route, which Mother Nature has prepared for millions of living creatures; for the dawn of a new planet, where they can continue to live and thrive.

We will have much to learn about the importance of biological corridors for the conservation of biodiversity and the evolution of species.

Going North first screening will be celebrated at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) Auditorium, at 11:00 am, on Monday, 16 February 2009. The screening will be attended by Mr. Eugenio Manghi, Producer; Mr. Franco Porcelli, Scientific Attache at the Italian Embassy in Egypt; Ms. Hoda Elmikaty, Director of the BA Planetarium Science Center (PSC). The film will be available for showing, by reservation, at the “Listen and Discover” hall in the PSC.
