For the 5^th year in a row, The Planetarium Science Center (PSC), in collaboration with Intel Co. organized the Intel Bibliotheca Alexandrina Science and Engineering Fair (Intel BASEF), which was hosted by the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) from 10 to 12 March 2012.

Intel BASEF team has organized three Intel BASEF affiliate school fairs within the framework of Intel BASEF 2012 year long program,  in Victoria College ( from 27 to 28 December  2011), El-Nasr Girls College (from  7 to 8 February 2012), and El-Nasr Boys School (from 22 to 23 February 2012).

37 projects participated in Victoria College Science and Engineering Fair VCSEF (from 27 to 28 December  2011) in eight different categories. 51 students from grade 7 to grade 12 participated at the school science fair.

55 inspiring science projects participated at El-Nasr Girls College Science and Engineering Fair EGCSEF (from 7 to 8 February 2012) in eleven different categories. 82 students from grade 7 to grade 12 participated at the school science fair. 

52 projects participated at El-Nasr Boys School Science and Engineering Fair EBSSEF (from 22 to 23 February 2012) in eleven different categories. 71 students from grade 7 to grade 12 participated at the school science fair.

Students’ Registration for participation at Intel BASEF 2012 was closed on 22 Feb 2012, 169 projects have succeeded in registering on Intel BASEF official registration page, to compete together in 15 different categories. Intel BASEF screening round was held on 25 February 2012. The total number of students who participated at Intel BASEF screening round was 266 students.

Intel BASEF 2012 Judging committee has announced the qualification of a total of 80 projects only, to participate at Intel BASEF final fair which was held from 10 till 12 March 2012, at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Conference Center. Those 80 projects, were in 13 different categories, and included 71 projects, which were qualified after passing Intel BASEF screening round and 9 winning projects from the three Intel BASEF affiliate school fairs. Out of those 80 projects, 19 were underage in 6 different categories. The total number of students who participated at Intel BASEF is 119 students.

Intel BASEF 2012 judging committee included 30 judges from multidisciplinary backgrounds, who, not only, assisted in judging the participating students’ projects, but also, provided valuable guidance to the students to help shape their perception of scientific research and planning related to their projects.

• Intel BASEF 2012 Grand Awards winners, who will represent Egypt at Intel International Science and Engineering Fair 2012, held in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania May 13th -18th 2012 are:

- 1st Place award went to Moataz Ahmed Abd El-Ghafar, for his project entitled “Follow Mau’s paws”.

- 2nd Place award went to Osama Ahmed, Magdi Mamdouh and Esraa Saleh, for their project entitled “How to improve the efficiency of p-n junction silicon based solar cells using a nano material as a dopant”.

- 3rd Place award went to Clara Halim Zakhary and Ola Ezzat, for their project entitled “How to Detect Corrosion”.

- In Microbiology Category: 1st Place award went to Yara Ahmed, for her project entitled “The Fight of the Black Knight-Phase Two”.

- In Medicine and Health Sciences Category: 1st Place award went to Shady Mohamed El-Naggar, for his project entitled “Brian Alarm of Relaxation”.  2nd Place award went to Rana Mohamed Adam, for her project entitled “Antifungal role of eucalyptus; possible future therapeutic implications for bronchial Asthma”.  3rd Place award went to Omar Mohamed Abdel Razik, for his project entitled “Treatment of skin cancer using zinc oxide nanoparticles”.
