01 December 2014
On the 13th of November 2014, Egypt’s world-famous Library of Alexandria and the global 1001 Inventions organisation have announced a four-year partnership agreement as part of a national educational programme in Egypt, to raise awareness and celebrate the unacknowledged history of science and technology in Muslim Civilisation.
1001 Inventions and the Library of Alexandria (Bibliotheca Alexandrina) have agreed to work together on a series of initiatives, based around the award-winning educational work of 1001 Inventions, to inspire young people to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and medicine and build their capacity towards building a better future for the country.
The partnership agreement has been facilitated by the Prime Minister of Egypt who recently met with representatives of both organisations to discuss a national programme to popularize the work of 1001 Inventions throughout Egypt.
Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director, Library of Alexandria, said: “Egypt has a history of academic excellence going back millennia, and the passion this nation has for education continues to this day. The legacy of Arab and Muslim Civilisation is an ongoing gift to humanity and Egypt has a central place in the creation of that legacy. This important and worthy partnership with the international organisation 1001 Inventions, will further support the efforts of the Library of Alexandria to promote science and technology among school students and the public at large, and to show their relevance to everyday life.”
Ahmed Salim, Producer and Director, 1001 Inventions, said: “1001 Inventions is privileged to be working with the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. The Egyptian nation has played a significant role in the development and preservation of knowledge throughout history. It has served as the home and the inspiration for some of the greatest minds of all time, who’ve had a huge but underappreciated impact on the way we live our lives today. 1001 Inventions brings to life the stories of those astounding and extraordinary individuals, and as a result inspires young people to pursue careers in science and technology and creating Egyptian solutions to 21st century challenges.”
The four-year collaboration will include touring interactive exhibitions, hands-on workshops, educational films, live shows and teaching resources, all of which will be provided in Arabic as well as English.
1001 Inventions is the world’s leading brand highlighting the history of science and technology in Muslim Civilisation, and has partnered with numerous international organisations including UNESCO, National Geographic and science museums in both hemispheres. 1001 Inventions is a British non-profit organisation that has received praise and support from governments and heads of state throughout the world.
The New Library of Alexandria is dedicated to recapture the spirit of openness and scholarship of the original Bibliotheca Alexandrina. Its mission is to be a center of excellence for the production and dissemination of knowledge, and to be a place of dialogue and understanding between cultures and peoples.
The Planetarium Science Center (PSC) is an affiliate center of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA). It is a not-for-profit edutainment center dedicated to increasing the public's understanding and appreciation of science, technology and mathematics through hands-on activities, planetarium shows and interactive exhibits. Our motto “Science for All” aims to serve and to reach out to a broader spectrum of society, to introduce the public to the marvels of Science and its applications in our everyday life activities.
